What is Subcase Cyber?
In other circumstances, we would now be meeting live in Stockholm at the 11th edition of Subcase, enjoying each others company in an environment of circus arts.
Instead, we proudly present the best we came up with as an option: an online Subcase forest painted by the Swedish illustrator Kamilla Andersson.
We made a choice to present mainly pre-recorded material, in order for you to take part of Nordic and Baltic artists´ work when and at a pace that suits you.
A committee made a selection of 20 artistic projects to be presented, when we still believed that Subcase would happen live. After realizing it will be purely online, we opened up the possibility for many more to be visible here. Hence, 58 artistic companies are presented, in different ways and contexts.
We made a choice to organise only a few occasions to meet live on Zoom, all in intimate settings and all highly participative:
– in the Bonfires, to imagine futures together
– in Feedback Partnerships, to reflect on artistic projects in the now and future
– in The Huddle, on the specific topic of exclusion.
However! We warmly encourage you to self-organize: to contact each other for your own meetings, with the help of the contact info on the Participants page.
In this time of crises, staying connected and supporting each other is of immense importance – across our functions as artists, presenters and funders, internationally and locally. This is also an opportunity to do things differently: to listen to each other, educate and nurture ourselves, reflect together on how our field is constructed – and on how to change its architectures.
Development in terms of representation is strongly at risk in times of protectionism and fear. The Nordic and Baltic circus scene had already lacked reflection on its own diversity. Now, questions of inclusion and exclusion are burning. With The Huddle we aim to feed a conversation which we hope, in the long run, will contribute to making circus more democratically aware.
We wish you a fertilizing, nurturing, and maybe even fruitful, Subcase Cyber week!
PS. Behind the curtain to the left in the forest you find a Welcome speech.

If the question of representation, diversity or inclusion has arisen in your field, institution or practice as an artist or producer, as a problem – then FutureBlackSpace offers an experiential online environment within which to contemplate and work with this question.
FutureBlackSpace does so from the embodied perspective of blackness working in majority white institutions and fields, as an example of what exclusion does on a structural, cultural, political and personal level. Not all exclusions are the same. So, from this example, we invite you to work with an intersectional lens on who/what your institution/field/artistic work does not include and why? What could you do about it? Why do you want to do something about it?
The two-day event is an aesthetic weave of performance lecture, creative writing workshops, discussion groups, podcasts, music and video. It is curated by the FutureBlackSpace team of artists, scholars in gender studies, intersectionality, decolonisation, psychoanalysis and dance, professionals in curatorial practice, fashion, perfumery, psychotherapy and organisational consultation.
The Huddle is facilitated by John-Paul Zaccarini, Professor in Performing Arts at Stockholm University of the Arts, previously Associate Professor in Circus. The team consists of Dr. Ana Sanchez-Colberg, Hanna Wallensteen, Toubab Holmes, Camilla Welton, Dr. Anna Adenji, Majo Cruz and Andrea Davis-Kronlund.
Participants are required to commit to the full event, since it constitutes a process over two days:
Tuesday 16 February 10.00-12.30 and 13.30-15.30 (CET)
Wednesday 17 February 10.00-12.00 and 13.00-15.30 (CET)
Breaks are included, and part of the time is used for individual work.
If you haven’t signed up, but would like to participate, please send an email to registration@subtopia.se.
FutureBlackSpace is a creative space of recovery, discovery and project/artist development, free from the white gaze. It is designed for POC who operate within largely white fields/institutions and offers them a chance, through creative writing practices to reflect upon how this affects or troubles their work/study. It is meant as a supportive space that offers tools to generate authentic work from the specific experience of POC.
The Huddle is offered to all Subcase participants and is organized with the support of Stockholm University of the Arts, Nordic Culture Fund, Nordic Culture Point, The Swedish Arts Council and Region Stockholm.
In the Exhibition in Cyber Space, you can discover 22 Nordic and Baltic circus companies through links to their own webpages. There was no selection process to be part of the Exhibition in Cyber Space – first come was first served.
Subcase Cyber invites you to meet with colleagues from around the world at a digital Bonfire and share ideas for the future.
All participants are asked to prepare a brief presentation of a vision or a dream for the future (max 5 minutes), in relation to their work situation and experience and/or in relation to circus and performing arts.
In intimate breakout rooms of only four people you will share your vision and listen to the others.
The Bonfires take place twice during the Subcase week:
Thursday 18 February and Friday 19 February, both days at 15.00-15.45 CET.
If you haven’t signed up, but would like to participate, please send an email to registration@subtopia.se.
Subcase Cyber proudly presents a collaboration with the national Swedish federation for circus, street arts and variety, Manegen, who here present 16 of their members in a panorama of Swedish circus.
Join the Feedback Partnerships program!
At Subcase we find it important to encourage dialogue and thoughtful exchange between artists and presenters. As at earlier Subcases, artists presenting their work at Subcase Cyber and participating presenters can volunteer to be match-made for a blind date.
The aim is a constructive discussion about the local and international possibilities of artistic projects, starting from the existing circumstances of the world right now. When and how the dialogue takes place is up to the artist and presenter to decide – Subcase only mediates the contact. Then, perhaps over a coffee on Zoom or some other online platform, the artist and the presenter can meet.
The Feedback Partnerships program is not about stating “truths in general” or “selling work”. It is about sharing perspectives on continuing our mutual work, in a world that is shaking under our feet.
If you haven’t signed up, but would like to participate, please send an email to registration@subtopia.se.
