Only Bones v.1.6

Marina Cherry

About the company

Marina Cherry is of a breed that is hard to define. Like many humans, she is a layered multitude of bits and pieces. A contortionist/acro-dancer by formal training, she was educated at École Supérieure des Arts du Cirque in Brussels following the start of her professional circus training at École Nationale de Cirque in Montreal. Originally from Montana in the US, Marina spent her childhood immersed in gymnastics, dance, painting and orchestral music, before discovering the world of circus. Finding her singular niche somewhere deep in the pockets between contemporary circus and dance, her creations place research, innovation and a questioning of convention at their core. Primarily a solo artist, she also enjoys collaborations and is working in diverse projects around Europe including the upcoming production by Belgian company Petri Dish. Marina also works as a pedagogue and on her travels loves giving workshops in movement research, acro-dance and handstands. She is simultaneously pursuing a degree in philosophy (online) at the University of London.

About the performance

Lanky loidlings. Squishy Schloompings. Spiky Spa-doo-dlings. Marina Cherry squeaks, zooms, and tiptoes through a micro-space. Fragmenting pieces of a spunky personal universe puddle over the stage for her solo performance, ONLY BONES v1.6. Intriguingly engulfing, sporadically disturbing, this quirky conglomeration creates a mishmash of corporeal and cerebral manipulations – a follow-up project to the Only Bones (v.1.0) by Thomas Monckton. Bursting the bubbles of banality, balanced between the theatrical and physical, Marina nudges the limits, researching innovation amongst extreme constraints. Using only one light, the ONLY BONES project is a maximization of the minimal – a stripped down physical theatre and performance project. Working with the same restrictive parameters, its various solo performers create unique live shows that share a similar aesthetic. The guidelines are simple: only one light, no narrative, no set, no props, no text, and all within a limited amount of space”. Written and Performed by Marina Cherry. Co-direction by Thomas Monckton. Premiered in December 2020 Rovaniemi Theatre (Rovaniemi, FI).
